During times of recession, term life insurance often has to be the contract of choice to fit into the budget.
Term Life policies are of several types. Some accumulate a bit of cash value during the middle years, but most are strictly without cash accumulation features.
One of the most popular is the Level Term policy, sold for 10, 20, or 30 years level face amount with a guaranteed level premium. Many of these contracts have convertability features providing that they can be converted to permanent insurance plans without physical at a future date. In otherwords, they provide you a guaranteed insurability feature.
One variation of these plans is the RETURN OF PREMIUM plan. This is a term plan written a 10 or 20 year term. It charges slightly more money than the level term so it will be able to give back the premiums paid if the insured lives out the selected term for the contract.
Decreasing term plans are also available, although we tend to counsel against them. We have rarely seen the need for life insurance decrease like those policies do. We believe that, if you are enjoying success in life, your life insurance needs will increase rather than decrease. Therefore we recommend the use of level term plans instead of decreasing term plans. Decreasing term plans decrease in death benefit, not in premium, as the years tick by. This feature makes decreasing term the most expensive kind of term insurance you can buy if you keep it to maturity.

One of the most economical plans to buy is the Universal Life Plan with a Term Insurance Rider.
This approach capitalizes on the difference in plan design to provide you the least expensive way to buy term life insurance, and, at the same time, providing you a slice of permanent insurnace in the plan. It provides you all the positive features of the Uiversal Life plan. We encourage consideration of such a plan to create both a reserve fund and to capture life insurance at very low rates. For example, such a hybrid plan for a 39 year old woman costing $200 per month provided her with $100,000 of permanent insurance an $150,000 20 year term insurance.
The flexibiity feature of the policy provides extra security. You can pour extra premiums into the plan when times are good, and even skip a premium now an dthen during bad times. As long as the policy contains a cash reserve larger than the premiums due, the policy cannot lapse. Therefore, we encourage building up the reserve fund when there is a bonus of cash available. It gives security during months of unemployment, decreased wages, and similar diasters to the personal budget.

A few times we have been tiven the opportunity to set up payroll deduction plans for funding universal life policies for employees of the sponsoring firm.
Although it was a voluntary plan, over 70% of the employees signed up for a universal life plan and nearly half also set up an IRA plan for themselves. Employer sponsored or supported plans like this are wonderful for employee morale!
